Electric Vehicle Charging Station Costs: Investment Benefits and Cost Efficiency

Electricity rates for EV charging stations feature distinct pricing, influenced by voltage levels and usage hours. Investment in a charging station includes equipment, installation, and operational costs, optimized to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles.

Electricity Rates for EV Charging Stations

Starting June 2025, EV charging stations will implement specific electricity pricing based on voltage levels and time slots. Medium and high voltage levels see rates from 1,565 to 3,835 VND/kWh, while low voltage reaches up to 4,298 VND/kWh during peak times. These rates ensure fairness in service provision and business equity.

These specialized electricity tariffs, separate from industrial and commercial customer groups, represent true service costs, fostering a sustainable EV market in Vietnam. Rates are categorized by voltage level and time frame.

For voltage levels, pricing divides into:

  • Medium and above (over 1kV): Off-peak rates at 71% of average retail rates (1,565 VND/kWh), regular hours at 118% (2,601 VND/kWh), and peak times at 174% (3,835 VND/kWh).
  • Low voltage (under 1kV): Off-peak rates reach 75% (1,653 VND/kWh), regular hours 125% (2,755 VND/kWh), with peak times up to 195% (4,298 VND/kWh).

Time slots—off-peak, normal, and peak hours—aim to reduce grid load during peak periods and encourage efficient electricity use. Rates higher than industrial users but lower than commercial customers ensure fairness.

This tariff policy aims to facilitate market growth for EVs by offering clear pricing for charging services, encouraging investment. It accurately reflects service costs, easing the cross-subsidy burden from residential, industrial, and business clients.

From a professional viewpoint, this new policy lays the groundwork for robust EV infrastructure development, attracting investment, and reducing urban traffic emissions. Although peak hour rates might impact small station operations, they propel businesses to invest in medium voltage systems for cost efficiency.

Investment Costs and Equipment for EV Charging Stations

Investment costs encompass equipment purchase, installation, and operational expenses. Slow charging stations start at 11 million VND, while advanced fast chargers like 250kW units can reach 3.272 billion VND. Infrastructure setup may require a transformer station, costing 300-500 million VND, with site rental around 10-50 million VND monthly.

Summary of EV Charging Station Costs

EV charging station pricing revolves around electricity rates and equipment costs. Electricity prices range from 1,565 to nearly 4,300 VND/kWh. Equipment investments vary widely, from 11 million to over 3 billion for 250kW fast chargers.

Investing in an EV charging station requires careful consideration of equipment and infrastructure costs.
